INSTRUCTION
PERMIT
KSA 8-239
Ages:14 or more
Duration: 12 months
1.Minimum age 14, valid for 1 year
2. If under age 16, written application of parent/guardian
required.
3. Non-Driver Ed students must pass vision and written
examinations.
*Driver's Ed students will receive a pink, paper permit on
the first driving lesson. This temporary permit needs
to be exchanged for the Photo IP at the DMV.
PARENTS:
EXCHANGE THIS TEMPORARY PINK SLIP FOR THE PHOTO IP DURING
THE DRIVING LESSONS. |
1*THE IP IS FOR SUPERVISED PRACTICE ONLY.
*Teen must be accompanied by adult (in
front seat). This adult must hold a valid DL & have
1 year driving experience.
2. NO person except supervising driver can be in front seat.
3. NO wireless communication device while driving except to
report emergencies.
PARENTS:
SUPERVISED PRACTICE MEANS THE TEEN CANNOT DRIVE SOLO ANYWHERE!
All students (which are under the age of 17) must hold
a Photo IP for 12 months.
PARENTS: This
law has been in place since Jan. 1, 2010. ...Yes, the IP will
expire...
All students (which
are under
the age of 18) must complete 50 hrs of *adult-supervised
driving.
PARENTS: This law
has been in place for over 12
years.
If you complete the practice 50 hours (40 day/10 night) before
obtaining the 15 year-old RL, the RL will automatically
convert into the next licensing stage at age 16. A
signed affidavit of parent
or guardian confirming the 50 practice hours of supervised
practice will
be required to obtain RL/DL..
Penalties apply to all teen drivers KSA 8-291 subject to
suspension or revocation as any other DL
Shall be suspended for any violation of restrictions
1st Offense -30-day suspension 2nd
Offense -90-day suspension 3rd
Offense -1 yr suspension |

Duration: 12-months
1. Minimum age 15.
2. Written application of parent or guardian required.

4. Must complete at least 25 of the 50 practice hours of supervised
driving. *(SEE NOTE BELOW)
5. Must have successfully completed an approved Driver's Ed
Course.
*NOTE: If you complete the 50 practice hrs before obtaining
the RL, it will automatically convert into the next licensing
stage at age 16.
16 YEAR OLD
DRIVER'S LICENSE
...Must
be 16 years old, held a Photo IP 12 months, completed 50
practice hours of supervised driving. During the 1st 6
months of holding this license, teen must following rules of
the probationary period. ---See highlighted info to your
right----
-Driver's Ed graduates,
which earn a Certificate of Completion aren't usually tested
at the DMV (besides the eye test)...A signed affidavit
of parent/guardian confirming 50 hours of supervised driving
is required.

With
the 15 year-old RL, the teen may drive (by themselves):
1. To/from or in connection with any employment or
farm-related work.
2. Over most direct/accessible route between home/school for
purpose of attendance.
3. Or when accompanied by an adult* (which is the holder of a
valid DL)).
4. NO non-sibling
minor passengers are allowed.
5. NO wireless
communication device while
driving except to report illegal activity or emergencies..

At age 16, the next licensing stage includes the 6 month
probationary period.
With the 16 year-old DL -- first 6 months---the teen may drive
(by themselves):
1. Anytime from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
2. To/from school activities, employment or farm-related work.
3. Or when accompanied by an adult* (with a valid DL), they
can drive after 9:00 PM..
During this 6 month probationary period (16 year-old DL):
-Only one
non-immediate family member minor passenger (less than 18) is
allowed.
-NO wireless
communication device is allowed
while driving except to report illegal activity or to summon
emergency help.
-AFTER
THE 6 MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD, THE TEEN IS THEN LEGAL TO
DRIVE AFTER 9:00 PM.
Penalties apply to
all teen drivers KSA 8-291 subject to suspension or revocation
as any other DL

Age
17 -for first-time applicants:
TEENS TURNING 16, WHICH
DID NOT OBTAIN THEIR PHOTO IP FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY.
1. Must provide proof of age &
identification. Non-Driver Education students must pass
vision, written & driving exams with appropriate license
in hand.
2. Signed affidavit of parent or guardian, stating applicant
has legally completed at least 50 hours of *adult-supervised
driving (with at least 10 of the hours occurring at night).
PARENTS: EXCHANGE THE TEMPORARY PINK SLIP FOR THE PHOTO
IP.

FARM
PERMIT
KSA 8-296
Ages: 14-17
1. Minimum age 14.
2. Must reside on farm/parcel of land larger than 20 acres
used in agricultural operations or be employed (for pay) on
farm.
3. Written application of parent/guardian required.
4. Complete the 50 hrs of *adult- supervised driving.
5. Non-Driver Ed students must pass vision, written and
driving examinations.
*Driver's Ed graduates, which earn a Certificate of
Completion aren't usually tested at the DMV (besides the eye

If
under age 16, may drive at any time:

other farm-related work.

Penalties apply to all teen drivers KSA 8-291 subject to
suspension or revocation as any other DL. Farm Permit shall be suspended for
violating restrictions or 2 or more crashes chargeable to holder.

--Use of wireless devices prohibited until (6 month period of
passenger/late-night driving restrictions) is completed.
KS law states that persons 14-17 years old MUST wear a seat
belt when riding in a vehicle.
Failure to do so will result in a $60 ticket.

minimum age for your course & what is needed prior to the
course? Answer: The minimum age for
driver's education in KS is 14. ...Do not worry if
you lack a permit or if your permit is expired.
You will receive a temporary permit through our class from the
State of KS. It's part of the DE 99 form, which we fill

IF A PHOTO IP EXPIRES, You
can: 1) renew your permit or 2) fulfill the requirements
to obtain your RL or DL.
