Classroom
Format:
The academic portion of the course
consists of 8 hours of classroom
instruction and covers the fundamental
techniques of driving, as well as
advanced techniques of defensive driving
in residential, rural, and urban areas.
Also detailed is night driving, driving
in adverse conditions, and the effects
of alcohol and other drugs as relating
to driving. Handling emergencies,
avoiding road rage, purchasing and maintaining a vehicle,
and auto insurance issues are also
covered. The only
item a student needs to bring to class is their instructional
permit. If the student doesn't have an IP, they will obtain
one through this course.
Students, which receive a pink, paper IP from Wichita Driving
School, usually need to exchange it for a picture IP at the DMV/Driver's License Office. When dropping off your
teen, please park in Wichita Driving School's parking lot or along
Country Acres Street. We open our
classroom 30 minutes before class time. The students are
welcome to come in during this time to work on their study guide,
which is designed to help them succeed on the final test. On
1 day, 8 hour classes, we will email the study guide to you in
advance, and we have a 1 hour lunch break from 12:00-1:00
PM. We have several eating establishments within 1 or 2
blocks of WDS. Note: All students,
which take driver education in the state of Kansas are required to
fill out a DE 99 application. One of the questions on this
form asks the student if they are currently taking any prescribed
medication for a physical or mental condition. This application is completed
on the first day of class at Wichita Driving School.

Driving Laws/Parents
Driving Format:
We will contact
the student's parents or student within 12 days after the two day academic
course to discuss arranging driving
times. (Remember,
if you have not made the second payment by the end of the academic
class, you will need to do so before driving sessions can be
scheduled) Please keep in mind that
we will be finishing up other students (BTW), which
attended a classroom session before you. It
typically takes a Wichita Driving School student about 4 weeks to
finish the entire course (2 day academic class and the 6
hours of driving). The six hours of driving will be
arranged to fit the student's schedule.
Each driving session will usually be at
least a minimum of 1 hour with a maximum
of 3 hours. The average driving time per
session for an advanced student is two
hours. The behind the wheel sessions
will include: Residential and city driving, highway and
Interstate driving, the various types of parking, handling the
downtown Central Business District, and a high focus on defensive
driving. The student driver will usually
be picked up from home unless otherwise
specified. Some get picked up from
school, work, or another location. At
the conclusion of each session, the
student will be dropped off at home
unless there is a special request. Some
students, for example, arrange to be
dropped off at school, work, church, or
a relative's house. All special
situations need to be approved by a
parent or guardian. Parents are of
course welcome in the car. Students
with no experience (especially adults) sometimes require extra
driving beyond the 6 hours. In such cases, the single most
important factor in successfully passing the driving portion of
the course (in the standard 6 hours) is the Student/Student's
family being willing and/or able to practice between the driving
lessons. Our driver education cars
are equipped with duel brakes,
liability commercial insurance, and student
driver signs. Students,
which have a balance during the driving portion of the course, should give
the
final payment to their driving instructor. Please make all
checks payable to Wichita Driving
School, Inc

QUESTION:
My teenager is 15
years of age and would like
to drive to school and work. How do they get qualified to drive,
and what are the requirements for obtaining the Restricted
License?
ANSWER:
Keep in mind most
students must be 15 years old to get a Restricted License. But at
age 14, teens can get a permit, practice with parents, and even
take Driver Ed. To
obtain a Restricted License, a beginning driver must fulfill the
following requirements:
• Successfully complete a Driver Education Program. Graduated
Licensing Laws, which were passed in Kansas in 1999, require all
students under the age of 16 to complete a Driver Education
Course. Students 14 or older, can either take such a course from
their local high school, or from a private driving school. The
Certificate of Completion earned by passing the Driver Ed course
allows one to get the Restricted License at the DMV or Driver‘s
License Office. (The only testing usually required is the eye
test)
Note: The Restricted License allows one to drive by themselves
to school and work, or with an adult which has a valid driver‘s
license. No minor passengers (besides siblings) are allowed to
ride with a restricted driver.
• Be the holder of an Instructional Permit for a minimum of 6
months. An IP can be obtained at age 14 or more by taking a
written test at the DMV, or by participating in a Driver Education
course. This 6-month rule no longer applies at age 16 or more.
• Complete 50 hours of practice with a parent or guardian,
with 10 of the hours occurring at night. The 50 hours of practice
are required for anyone under age 18.
• Students 16 or older can also get their regular Driver's
License by
providing the Driver Ed Certificate
of Completion to the DMV. (The only testing usually required is
the eye test) Starting
at age 16, teens which bypass driver education must complete a
written test and driving test at the DMV to get their license.
• For 15 year olds, there is a provision that allows for 25
practice hours, but a teen must go back to the DMV at age 16 to
renew their license. Students, which have completed the 50 hours
prior, will not have to go back at age 16, because their
Restricted License will automatically turn into a regular driver's
license at age 16. Also, the parent or guardian is required to
sign an affidavit at the DMV confirming the completion of the
practice hours. In 1999, the Kansas Legislature followed the lead
of other states, and formed new laws that changed the procedure
for obtaining restricted licenses and drivers' licenses.
"Graduating Licensing" is designed to give teens a
better-rounded driver training experience, which in turn makes
them more successful on the road, which is a good thing for all of
us!
